AIM for Seva is excited to present Anubhava: An experience of the senses for our 2023 donor appreciation event. The breathtaking visual artistry and captivating storytelling of acclaimed dancer and choreographer Rukmini Vijayakumar and the impressive musical talents of award-winning violinst Ambi Subramaniam unite for this unique production created especially for AIM for Seva.

Anubhava is sure to entertain and delight with its three movements that will weave stories and experiences for the audience to be immersed in. The production will include an interactive piece in which Rukmini and Ambi create a performance based on audience requests.

Rukmini Vijayakumar

choreographer, dancer, actress

A graduate of the Boston Conservatory, Rukmini is the founder and artistic director of Raadha Kalpa Dance Company, and the director of LshVa, a space for artists. She is known for her unique style and approach to the practice of Bharatanatyam, bringing creativity and contemporary thinking and execution to this ancient dance form. She has performed as a soloist all over the world, including at Jacobs Pillow, The Drive East Festival, and La MaMa Theatre NYC.

As an actor, Rukmini has had the privilege of working with some of the best filmmakers in the Indian film industry, including Bharathiraja, Mani Ratnam, R. Balki, and Soundarya Rajinikanth. She was nominated for a Filmfare Award as best supporting actress for her role in “Bhajarangi.”

Dr. Ambi Subramaniam

violinist, composer, educator

Hailed as “India’s Itzhak Perlman” by Ozy Magazine, Ambi Subramaniam has been trained by his father and guru Dr. L. Subramaniam since he was 3 years old. He has received the RITZ Icon of the Year Award, two GiMAs (Global Indian Music Academy award for Best Fusion Album and Best Carnatic Instrumental Album), and Big Indian Music Award (for Best Carnatic Album).

Along with his sister, Bindu Subramaniam, he runs SaPa – the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts – which trains young children to grow into performing musicians. He also runs the SaPa in Schools program, which helps children develop 21st-century skills using music as a gateway. Ambi co-hosts the SaPa Show on Sankara TV, which teaches Indian music to children around the world from the comfort of their homes.

Ambi plays as part of contemporary world music band SubraMania, which he formed with Bindu. He also plays as part of the Thayir Sadam Project, a Carnatic fusion collective he formed with Bindu, Mahesh Raghvan, and percussionist Akshay Anantapadmanabhan.

Dr. Rohan Krishnamurthy

PERCUSSIONIST, COMPOSER, EDUCATOR

Indian-American percussionist, composer, and educator Dr. Rohan Krishnamurthy is one of the leading voices of Indian classical and cross-genre music in the South Asian diaspora. Acclaimed a “musical ambassador” by The Times of India, he received mridangam training from the legendary maestro, Sri. Guruvayur Dorai, tabla with Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri at the Ali Akbar College of Music, and drum set with Alan Hall at the California Jazz Conservatory.

Distinguished as a soloist, composer, and collaborator, Rohan performed with legendary Indian classical musicians and Grammy Award-winning global artists. Rohan leads The Alaya Project, an Indo-jazz-funk collective featuring celebrated saxophonist Prasant Radhakrishnan and keyboardist Colin Hogan. The group’s recently released debut album has been praised by Jazziz Magazine, NPR, San Francisco Chronicle, and more.

Rohan holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the Eastman School of Music and directs the RohanRhythm Percussion Studio with students from across the globe. Rohan is the recipient of international awards and grants including commissions from the San Francisco Arts Commission, Zellerbach Foundation, and Goethe Institute (Germany). He has taught at renowned institutions, and his patented RohanRhythm drum tuning system is available worldwide.

Gyandev Singh

Lighting Designer

A graduate of the National School of Drama, New Delhi, Gyandev Singh has worked as a lighting designer with many eminent dancers and theatre directors such as Leela Samson, Aditi Mangaldas, Roysten Abel, Anuradha Kapur, Kavalam Narayana Panikkar, Madhavi Mudgal, Malavika Sarukkai, Kumudini Lakhiya, Lushin Dubey, Ashley Lobo, and Apsaras Arts, Singapore. He is the recipient of the prestigious Bismillah Khan Yuva Award for stage lighting design by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

He has travelled all over the world as a designer and been invited to perform in festivals like The Edinburgh International Festival, The Bon Biennale, the Prague Quadrennial, the Korzo International Dance Festival, The Internationale Tanzmesse Festival, and the Dancing the Gods Festival, to name a few.

He has performed in venues like the Great Hall of the People, China; Esplanade Theatres, Singapore; Nelum Pokuna Theatre, Colombo; Suzanne Dellal Centre, Tel Aviv; Symphony Space, New York City; The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington D.C.; and the Sydney Opera House.
